Even if one believes consumer protection legislation can be counter-productive, ThingMatch can help.

In a recent blog entry at Legal theory blog Lawrence Solum refers to work by Butler & Johnston and speculates on the possibility that

"State Consumer Protection Acts (CPAs) [] ... with relaxed rules for establishing liability, statutory damages, damage multipliers, attorneys fees and costs, and class actions - solves the basic economic problem that CPAs were intended to address several times over. The effect of this redundancy in solutions is that CPAs can deter the provision of valuable information to consumers and, thus, harm consumers. "  lsolum.typepad.com/legaltheory/2008/04/butler-johnston.html

An implication of this analysis is that consumer information is a valuable commodity affecting the welfare of consumers in a basic way.

One of our thoughts here at ThingMatch is that no matter how legislatures respond to evolving legal theory our endeavor to increase available information on a peer-to-peer user basis can only improve the lot of consumers.
