Check out Jeremiah Owyang at http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/.

Based on the research and documentation he provides one of the main conclusions is that users trust peers and those they know. There is less trust for reviewers, manufacturers, experts, retailers, content editors, bloggers and consumer review contributors.

This raises a founding principle of ThingMatch, namely that users will be able to develop trust in others who join a discussion specifically targeted to the set of users currently using the same product as they. The reason for this is that in the back and forth of discussion, it can be easy to detect phony or disengenuous writing. Someone using and thinking about a product will sense superficial or manipulative postings because it will not resonate in the field of their own experience. Of course technology can also be brought to bear on the challenges of trust. We are fortunatel to have learned many techniques from our sister site www.consumerdemocracy.com which has provided huge amounts of data since 1996 that we have used to develop and test approaches to data quality.
